Question
I have had my cockatiel almost 2 years. I found him in my back yard and had no previous experience with birds. In the past 6 months he has indicated that he wanted to go to bed (have his cage covered for the night) at 7:15 in the evening. Up until this time he always stayed up till 10:30-11:00 happily talking and whistling on his favorite perch. He climbs on his cage less too. He hasn't completely stopped talking and whistling, it's just reduced. In addition to this he doesn't seem anxious to have his cover off in the morning. He stays up on his night time perch and doesn't make a peep. He used to wake me up with his talking and whistling. Do you think he is just getting old? Another change...my daughter left for college. Do you think it's just too quiet around my house (I live alone).Does he miss the action and the talking? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello,
I'm sure there are many possibilities for his change in behavior.

Yes, maybe he has no reason to get up in the morning, no action or as much love?
Maybe he is getting old. Or maybe could be getting sick? I would take him to a vet for an exam, if nothing is wrong with him, maybe getting him another bird would be great for him. If you know for sure he is a male, try adopting a female cockatiel. If they are later to mate and lay eggs, you can just throw the eggs away, making sure you crack them so they don't grow and eventually hatch at the dump later..

But another bird friend would do him good!

Hope this helps,
Carly
