lovebirds laying eggs

Question
I have 7 lovebirds have been raising them for almost 2 years, this will be my 4th batch of babies.
My question is my first time mom laid 9 eggs. Should I remove some of the eggs or let her do with them that she thinks is best? This is the 1st time that I have ever had this many eggs at one time. they usually lay 4 to 6.
Thanks
Tammie

Answer
Hi Tammie,

I would imagine that some of those eggs are not fertile, and hopefully they will not all hatch. You can candle them to see if they are all fertile, and if they are... I would recommend removing some, since (if they all hatched) 9 babies would be too much for mom & dad to care for properly.

I would also recommend removing the nest box and discouraging her from breeding after this clutch. Normally it is recommended to only breed the birds once a year (what they would do in the wild) to keep their bodies from getting drained/stressed. (And to keep them out of a cycle of constantly raising eggs/babies- one clutch after another).

I hope this helps. And sorry it took me a few days to get back to you.
