canary with neck problem

Question
Hi Maggie, one of our three otherwise healthy canary chicks has developed a mysterious neck problem; it hatched 23 days ago and was the first to leave the nest about a week ago; it was fine until the day before yesterday when we noticed it couldn't move it's head properly, almost as if it's neck was broken or a nerve trapped - perhaps it fell and landed awkwardly - we really don't know;the parent birds continue to feed it and it seems sort of OK in between, hopping about and atempting to preen itself but the poor creature looks very awkward indeed, sleeping as if its head has been rotated.  A couple of times we thought the end was nigh and then the little fella perked up again. Do you think a vet may be able to do anything?

Answer
Since I am not a vet, and cannot view your bird... I cannot help you determine what might be wrong (or if this bird might be a threat to the health of your other birds). You need to get him to an avian vet asap for a through exam.

You can find an avian vet near you at these websites:

www.aav.org

and

I hope this helps, and I hope the little guy pulls through. The sooner you get him to a vet though, the better his chances for recovery.
