Question
QUESTION: Dear Roger,

I have a pair of lovebirds male/femal. They had 5 eggs and unfortunatly damaged I dont know why, and again she had 3 eggs and also damaged, and recently she got another 3 eggs and am worry.  Please why the eggs damaged? And what can I do to fix it?
They have a nest box.

Thanx, Waiting your reply ASAP.

ANSWER: Well, I can't exactly tell you what happened because I don't know how the eggs got damaged. If the eggs were damaged by the birds sitting on them, then perhaps the egg shells are too thin. IF the egg shells are too thin, it means that the birds are not depositing enough calcium or phosphorus on them. This could be because they are not getting the minerals in their diet or something metabolic is preventing the deposition of the minerals. You need to determine first if the cause is thin eggshells. I can't tell you how to fix it until you find out what the exact cause is, but I suspect thin eggshells due to a lack of calcium.

QUESTION: Thank you Mr.Roger for the prompt reply.  In fact the eggshell become slant to the dark color, then I realized that the bird not sitting on the eggs.  Does it means that the birds are not depositing enough calcium or phosphorus on them?  Or there is somthing els?

Thank you

ANSWER: I don't know what you mean by "become slant to the dark color". Do you mean you can see thru them? I don't know why the bird is not sitting on the eggs - could be they are too young and don't know what to do. That behavior probably has nothing to do with the thickness of the eggshell. You should compare the eggshells with a normal egg to find out.

QUESTION: Mr.Roger,

I would love to send you a picture of the eggs if you want, so you can sort out the problem.  In the beginnig the eggshell was white after the date eighteenth it become dark, so the bird bury them under the nest, and then she ignore it, I mean she stopped lying on it. Does it that mean that the eggs unfertilized?  Or the bird still young?

Thank you

Answer
It's difficult to know exactly what is happening, but it sounds like the eggs are either developing and then go bad or are just unfertilized and then go bad (rot). If the parents are still young, then they simply do not have the experience to know what to do. Burying eggs is pretty common for young breeding pairs. Usually the parents will sit on the eggs at least for the time it takes for them to hatch (3 weeks)but if they don't, it could be for a bunch of reasons. Without being there and seeing everything, I can't give you any more specific advice.
