Question
We are watching our neighbor's budgie, very tame and social.  We thought he
was aclimated to the house, and he flew pell mell down the hallway with the
dog in pursuit.  By the time I got to him, he was inthe dog's mouth...I'm afraid
my dog has broken the bird's leg.  I don't see any puncture wounds on his
body, but there is blood on his leg and he is guarding it and won't sit on it.
Right now I have cleaned the wound with a q-tip and peroxide, and have him
in a quiet place with the cage covered...what do I do now?  Do you take a
budgie to the vet???

Answer
Hi, Julie,

Yes, there are avian veterinarians, also known as exotic animal vets (vets that treat reptiles and other exotics).  Not the same as a cat/dog vet (your cat/dog vet knows nothing about birds).  Since there is blood present, there is damage.  I recommend you seek certified avian vet assistance for this bird.  www.aav.org can help you locate a bird vet in your area.
