Question
I am temporarily taking care of a Macaw bird for a couple of months already.  The macaw bird that is laying 3 eggs every month for the past 4 months, is this normal? She does not have a male partner.  Also, Her nails are getting a bit too long, do i need to take the bird to the vet to have this done?  If it can be done at home, what is the best method?  Thanks for your time.

Answer
If you can handle the bird without upsetting it, you can you a small dremel tool to grind the nails down. Laying 12 eggs in 4 months is not normal. Is she laying these eggs in a box or on bottom of cage? If she is laying in a box, i would remove the box to break the cycle. Or another option would be to let her sit on the eggs if that is what she wants to do. Maybe her mother instincts are kicking in and she has the urge to lay and sit on the eggs.

Your a great friend to baby sit a macaw. Can i call you to keep my 3 when I go on vacation? :>) (Just joking)

Good Luck,
