Question
Hi,
I am 46 years young . We relocated to Oregon and have gotten our girls into horses and 4H. I traded a horse that was too much for my daughter for a 3 year old thorough bred quarter horse(registered). My plan was to sell him and get my money back on the other horse .I like him and decided to keep him ,take lessons and train him . I am not afraid of horses and have been kicked and thrown by my daughters horses . Is this something I should take on ? Reno has been ridden but definitely does not have an attention span or boundaries as far as personal space . If this is something I can or should do,where do I start?

Thank You For Your Time
Mike Sheppard

Answer
Hi Mike,

If you're prepared to take lots of lessons, have the patience of a saint and the heart of a lion then there is no reason why you shouldn't attempt to train this horse.

Try to find a good trainer that will not only help you whilst riding, but one that is also prepared to spend time on the ground with you both.

The beginning training of a horse is much too detailed to describe here, I suggest you read as much as you can.  Good books for starters are:  Reiner Klimke - Basic Training of the Young Horse and Anthony Crossley - Training the Young Horse - From Beginning to Medium Level (book 1).

There are many other good books available.  Check your local library for what is available.

Good luck & have fun!!
