Question
I bought a 2 1/2 year old appaloosa mare and have recently began doing some light work with her and everytime I get on her (bareback) she starts walking backwards. I figure it's because to get her to back up her owners would stand slightly behind her. I was just wondering if you could give me some ideas on how to work on this.

I also have another quick question : How often do mares go into heat?

Answer
Hi Mia!

The fact that your mare is walking backwards worries me.
Allot.

This is a classic symptom of a young horse that was broke to riding improperly and does not fully understand the process.

This is bad for several reasons.

The first most simple reason is backing leads to REARING.
A very dangerous habit the once started is impossible to break.

Also, you have to realize that this is a very, very important phase in your young mare's life. It will impact her greatly and shape the way she acts undersaddle forever.

STOP riding her and seek the help of a professional in your area who specialises in breaking babies.

It is your responsibility as her loving owner to give Luna the best possible start in life.

Well trained horses live long happy lives.

Good Luck! And remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
