Pregnant mare w/ 1 yr old colt

Question
I have recently resuced a pregnant mare suppossed to be due in March. I was wondering if it would be ok to put her in the same pasture as a 1 year old colt.

Answer
Hello Andee,

First thing I would do is to have the mare Vet checked to see if she is for sure in foal. If she IS pregnant then you could keep them together until she foals.  If she is NOT then keep them apart. A colt can produce fertile sperm starting as early as 8 months of age. Even if the testicles have not dropped they can still get the job done. Their are recorded cases of 8 to 10 month colts with offspring.  Good luck to you and congrats on the new mare!
