Question
I have just bought a young 2 and a half year old filly and i was wondering what age should i start breaking her in ?

Answer
Hi there,

A horse continues to grow until they about 7 years old, but it is most vulnerable from birth to 3yo.

I would wait until your filly is 3 years old and then train her to saddle.  I would continue to keep her work light ie: no more than 30 - 40mins until she is 4.  Past 4 you can slowly increase her workload.

In the mean time, handle her a lot.  Groom her, pick out her feet, teach her to lead and stand correctly.  Spend lots of time with her and start building your partnership.

It may seem like a slow process, but the extra time taken now, will add years to her performance life and general health and happiness.

Cheers
