Question
"hi i brought a 14yr 16h t/b 18 days ago i let him settle in his field for a while in till the mare in the next field left the field to go for  hack , tommy (my horse ) got very restless so i thought i would bring him out to the school ring so he didn't feel left out , however when he realized he was not going to be following the mare he reared up with me and went over on his back ( now waiting a back check just in case ) would i of been better just leaving him in his field ? a few days have passed now and he doesn't get so stressed when the mare leaves her field , i have been lunging him and put tack on him as well and had a friend get on him but he reared again with her on right over . ( i am getting his back checked as this maybe the problem ) do you think he was just stressed when his new friend ( mare) left him behind what with new surrounding etc ? do you think the mare was like his security blanket ? many thanks Rachel"

Answer
Hiya Rachel,

I've given you the short answer on facebook, but I would think he's just a little insecure right now, and still finding his feet.  Get his back and saddle fit checked out, that could be the cause of the rearing...and then gently start schooling...in a half seat if you have to, take the weight off his back.

Good luck with him, and remember, it will take a while for him to settle in.
