O ring snaffle
O ring snaffle
hello ma'am, are flat O ring of the O ring snaffle more painful than the normal O ring of the same snaffle irrespective of any mouthpiece material and its thickness?

for clear idea, i attached an image consisting of two bits with different ring models. image (a) is flat O ring and image (b) is the normal O ring. i haven't seen any of our trainers using the flat O ring.

Answer
Rohit,

You ask such good questions.

In my opinion, I do not think there is much difference to the horse whether the rings are round or flat.

The first example of the flat ring bit with decoration (in the States)  would be used more for w western horse, or a horse ridden in a western class with horses 4 years old and under. (a silly rule to not allow older horses to use a snaffle).

Exhibitors riding horses thought of as western breeds ( Quarter horses, paints, etc.)would also be more likely to wear these bits.

I will not go into the shape of the bits, but will mention that both may cause pinching in the corners of the horse's mouth. There is something called bit guards, which are rubber circles which go around the rings and lie parallel alongside the side of the horse's mouth. They serve as a protection, as they rest between the horse's mouth and the bit.
