Horse outlines

Question
Okay, Im confused. what exactly are all the different outlines a horse can get? And how are they supposed to carry themselves correctly? Is there one way?
Ive heard that should be started in a long and low outline (Im assuming thats a relaxed, non on the forehand way?) then bought up onto contact and into a higher outline as they get older. Is this true? How long should they work long and low?

Please help, I dont mind websites, I just want to know because Ive heard so many different things and different versions on what is right.

I need definitions and what is correct.

e.g Ive heard that many show rider have there horses too far behind the vertical?

Sorry if its confusing and complicated. Thanks

Answer
Hi Alanna,

This is way too big a topic to discuss in this small space.  Suffice to say that there are many different outlines and each discipline (dressage, western etc) has their own requirements.

Just FYI a horse can be long and low and still on the forehand!

For a website I would have a look at the following for starters:

http://www.sustainabledressage.com/index.php

If your emphasis is dressage or cross training I would suggest a book called Commonsense Dressage by Sally O'Connor.

Otherwise, if you need help applying the theory in practice I suggest you engage the assistance of a good instructor in your chosen discipline.

Good luck!
