Question
hi solange
I board my horse at a farm with racehorses there are two stallions i help out there also with the horses one stallion is 10yrs the other 25yrs both horses are let out separate and alone could you put them out together or out with a gelding, they both want to bite since its been really cold they are all staying in there stalls but even when its nice there is only one pasture for the two stallions so they have to share there time.spending time with the 10yr old he does become nicer but not able to be there all the time.

Answer
Hi Sheri!

I understand your question but, I cannot give advice to non-owners of the horse(s).

I can however say in the broadest of terms, that stallions can rarely be put out with others.

I know of a draught breeder that keeps his stallion in with the entire mare herd until he wants them to breed in the spring.  Then he separates them.

I know of a QH breeder that has turned her old, retired stallion loose on the farm.  Loose!!  He just walks around where he pleases.  LOL!

But, as a general rule, unless a stallion has been raised to be around a "pasturemate", taught his manners by them and the owner.....unless that happens....then the stallion is not mentally prepared to share his pasture i.e. "territory" and he will fight.

I know some think it is cruel to keep stallions so isolated.  However, if they do not know anything else....well, then they do not know what they are missing.

As with all horses, each stallion is different and it is up to the owner to decide what the horse can bear mentally and physically.

Stallions must be handled with extreme caution and at all times and the handler must always be on guard and in control of the situation at all times.

Good luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
