Question

O ring snaffles
hello, in this picture i have attached, what is the difference between figure 1 and figure 2 regardless about the mouthpiece. i mean, both are 0 ring snaffles. but why figure 1 mouthpiece is a quite broader when compared to figure 2 mouthpiece? in these, which bit would pinch the corners of the horse lips more and which bit is more severe on the horse? which bit would you suggest me to start a 2 year old thoroughbred racing horse with since that age group is more sensitive?

Answer
Hello Caine,

I would start your young horse with a Bitless Bridle.
I never put a bit in a young horse's mouth. At the age of 2 you need to be just doing ground work with your horse (long lining and light lungeing) for another year and a half anyway.
Do not mount a horse at least until they are 3 and then they should be ridden VERY lightly.
This way they have a chance of remaining sound mentally and physcally for many years. It will save you money and time in the long run.

If you do decide to use a bit when your horse is coming 4, then I would suggest a bit like number (1).
It has the 'bone" shaped mouthpiece, an extra link, which many horse find releives the pressure on their tongue.

All horses have different conformation in their mouths. Some are smaller, some have low palates, some have larger tongues.

I see now that your young horse is to be raced. That is a hard life for a horse...many break down. If you insist on racing him I would still start off without a bit and I would
still wait a year. The money you might not make racing would very probably be made when he is one year older and he will stay sound longer.

They should not race horses until they are three and have Stakes races (Kentucky Derby, etc.) until they are four. (in my opinion).
