behavioural issues

i have a 8 yr old gelding who when ridden will refuse to walk and will refuse to follow direct orders .... when firmly given a direction he will bow his neck and walk backwards .. are there some activities i can do to get him to respond better ?

Befoe I recommend anything specific I would like more information.  What is his breed?  How long have you owned him?  What is his training background? What is your level of riding?  What discipline are your riding him?  What are your goals with him? And please describe the tack he wears.
