quarter marks on horses

quarter marks on horse   hello sir. may i know the uses of quarter marks on horses, especially racehorses? is it harsh on the animal? can you please explain?

Answer
It is purely cosmetic. It is only there for looks. It is used alot in eventing horses. Mostly with horses with alot of hair. No it is not painful or harsh. You are only clipping hair or combing it in a direction to make the design.
