Question

Jasper
I have a 3 yo TB that we purchased a month ago. When we change our routine on doing things he becomes antsy or frustrated. Is this normal? One time my husband had tried to give him the wormer while the horse was in his stall but the horse spit it out. The next day my husband was going to try it again. This time the horse was in the pasture when he saw my husband with the wormer. The horse took off for the other end of the pasture. My husband set down the wormer and got the lead rope to go get him. When my husband got near the horse then the horse took off to his stall. He reminded me of a child going to their room when they get frustrated or don't want to do something. If my husband tries to check the hooves while in the pasture the horse will start pawing the ground but we do not get this behavior while in the stall. We pasture him during the day and stall him at night. The last 3 nights we had his blanket on him because of the temps. Every morning I go and take it off and let him out. This morning I changed up the way I usually do it and he was really antsy. Do I need to stick to a routine or do I need to get him use to doing things differently and in different places? Also he was fed an hour later than usual.

Answer
Hi Jana,
It sounds as though your horse maybe an off the Track TB or was trained to be one. These horses are trained to do things according to a certain routine. They are brushed in their stalls, are fed in them. They are blanketed in them. This makes it easier for the people working with the horse. I would start to break this routine. Feed him outside of the stall at different times. Brush him in different places. The same for worming him. Let him know that his stall is still a safe place to be but so are other places.
