age limitation of a horse for retirement from show jumping

Question
hello, how can i say that my show jumping horse should be retired from his career? upto how many years of its age can a horse participate in show jumping?

Answer
The answer to this depends on so many factors.

Conformation, breed, care of the horse throughout his life, what he was fed, how he was shod, etc.  How he is trained is VERY important...fit of tack, etc.

In the States, often horses of Morgan breeding and Arabian breeding tend to stay sound and are useful longer, but again this is a general statement.
Idle Dice was a horse who won the European Jumoing Derby when he was 19.I THINK he was mostly Thoroughbred. I will have to look this information up.

You will also see a horse break down and not be sound when they are fairly young.

There is an old saying among jump riders that a horse only has so many jumps in him. Many top trainers do not jump their horses all that often. They spend many days on flatwork (dressage for jumping), and over ground poles.
