Question
I a yearling quarter horse stallion.I'm not sure if I should geld him or not.I am 14 years old and he is my first horse. My grandma wants me to keep him intacted so that we can breed him because he has really good blood lines. But some people tell that I should geld him because of my inexperience with horses and other people tell that stallions can be as good as a gelding but Im not sure.I have been riding horses for about 7 years.I just dont know if I am ready to own a stallion.Do you think you can help me out?

Answer
Hi Bree'a,
Geld your colt. With today's horse market being as depressed as it is, unless you have a horse that has superior conformation, a great attitude and who has done well in a show ring or on a race track it does not pay to breed him. Also if you have a stallion you are going to have problems finding places to board him, people are not going to want to ride with you since they will worry that your stallion will hurt their mares. A stallion can make a better gelding. At 14 you want to be able to enjoy your horse, not have to worry about the extra risks that having a stallion can make.
