sarcoid tumors

Question
Tex is one of my geldings. He is sorrel and white paint. The poor guy had his eye shot out last year by the STUPID kid that lives on the property that joins ours. Short of killing the kid or shooting "his" eye out I could not think of anything to do other than focus my energy on my injured friend. We got through that and he can still be ridden on trails by my husband or myself. It's been 2 years and he's still not trusting of anybody else at this point. Thats fine because we don't let other people ride our horses anyway. That may be selfish but oh well. Now after all that he's come up with a sarcoid tumor on his front leg. He's 12. I have researched the Internet about sarcoid tumors and they give little hope to cure. Now my question is ...the vet wants to start chemo shots in the site. In my research I haven't found that it does allot of good to do that. Is it going to make Tex sick? Is he going to be in pain? What quality of life is he going to have? He is a big majestic QH and we love him enough to fight with him but we also love him enough to let him go if it's necessary. I will not let him suffer nor have poor quality of life. We are not rich people and we can only afford so much. I am willing to give him to someone who can afford the vet bills should they get out of hand but then again who do I trust to take care of him? i always said he would NEVER leave this place as long as I am breathing because of the eye injury. That kind of seems like a selfish statement now. Any advice as to what you would do?

Answer
That has to be your choice. I have not researched it or the treatment, but I think I would ask around, ask many vets for advice, do my research, if it may help, then I may try it and if his quality of life got bad then I would stop and let the cancer do what it will do until he affects his quality life and then do what needs to be done. I would not base my decision on my love or  wanting to keep him around for me, it would be base on the horse and what I would want if I was the horse.

Hope that helps,

rick
