Neck Reining

Question
Hi, I recently bought a paint gelding that was used for hunter class. I ride western. How do I teach him to neck rein?

Answer
Hi Marina!

This is a seemingly simple question but, I have no simple answer.

Your guy has probably been ridden in an English bit his whole life and now you want to re-train him to a curb and neck rein....something wholly different in his opinion!

I would contact a trainer who specializes in Western riding and have them come out and evaluate your horse.  It is not only the bit change and neck reining but, if you plan to show him does he understand all the gaits you are going to want him to do?

I would start this re-training of him to a WHOLE different discipline with his hooves on the right path!  Start at the beginning with the help of a knowlegable person/trainer. Putting in the time and money now will save you from trouble later!!

Good luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!

Learning to neck rein may be the least of your problems!
