Answer
Hi Barbara,
Congratulations on your new colt. But I have to ask...why do you want to keep him as a stud????
With the market and economy as it is, unless the sire or damm is a money-proven winner ( I mean TONS of money, like in the $200k range, not trophies or a couple of thousand dollars) it is not worth it. There are millions of studs out there producing and nobody to sell the babies to. So think long and hard about your decision. You might be better off cutting him and enjoying your gelding.
Either way, he needs to be worked. At 2 months old, you can't work him too long or you stand a chance of hurting him permanently. For now, I would put a halter/lead rope on him. Do not "yank" on his head/neck. You could hyper extend his neck causing severe damage. But gently bump on the lead rope toward you while stand at a 90 degree angle from his head. As soon as he turns to face you, release the pressure and rub him. Keep doing this. It will take time but well worth it. This will teach him to always face you and never turn to kick you. Remember....two eyes is better than two heels.
