Question
I ask this question with little hope.  I have had this mare for 6 years and have been repeatly told that she is not fixable.  Of her many many issues, trailering is the worst.  I spend weeks getting her comfortable and she now safe loads, is finally quiet when the door closes, the truck door opens, closes, and I turn the key.  These were all baby steps and the whole process took 6 weeks of 3-4 days a week.  She panics when the truck and trailer move.  Am I foolish for thinking this can be fixed?  The time it takes to put the truck in park and go back to the trailer, she is out of her mind, panic can't describe it.  She is good if another horse is in the trailer but its not feasible to trailer an extra horse.
She also has panic attacks when we ride away from the farm.  To describe her panic: buck, rear, run backwards, spin, sweat, shake, and lay down (has happened twice).  Her ground work is beautiful, she can remember a pattern in an instant.  She is super athletic and has a super nice stride.  I ride her bitless and she is very soft and responsive.  A bit in her mouth makes her panic-scary panic
Can't clip her.  I can lay a pair of clipper, running, in between her ears and she doesn't care but when I go to cutting the hair with the clippers she panics.  I can use scissors.
My goal is to have a horse that I can enjoy but doing organized trail rides and endurance races.
I am 47 years old, had horses a long time, forever I guess.  I am very familiar with training methods of ray hunt, Chris cox, jack branier, Clinton Anderson and I have successfully raised a few young ones, including a wild mustang, that I just finished a 50 mile weekend trail ride this past Sunday.  So I do have some tools but this mare is running out of options and I need help

Answer
Hi Tammy,
Sounds like you do have a very reactive mare! Man, I wish I was nearby so I could meet her and get a chance to work with her. Since you are very familiar with many great trainers (and from your 6 years with her) you must know that this type of horse takes a lot of patience to work with. If you want an easy, ready to go have fun horse you may want to look at selling your mare and getting a nice, mellow quarter horse. That being said, if you stick with this mare she sure will teach you a lot! I have a few questions about what you have been doing with her so I can come up with some ideas about how to get back to basics and build up some more trust in your mare. How is your mare with plastic bags? Can you pet her all over with one? Does she hold still? Will she walk around you softly while you pet her with it? Can your mare cross over a tarp? If you throw a rope over her back while you lounge her would she spook or think to herself "there goes mom with that rope again."  Let me know what kind of things you have been practicing with her, things you saw Ray Hunt do when colt starting or Clinton Anderson do on TV with a tricky, worried horse, and I will come up with a few ideas of things you can work on. If you really are happy with most of what you have going on and its only the trailer moving issue, I would check how well she walks in water, over a wooden bridge, and you could even build a small teeter totter to show her that things can move underneath her and she will live through the ordeal.
I look forward to hearing more about your mare.
Best Wishes,
