7yr old spoiled unbroke agressive gelding - Rick Gore Horsemanship

Question
Rick,  Please help!!!!  We bought a well bred quarter horse who spent all of his time standing around being spoiled by three very nice women.  Glenn has managed to do a nice job of teaching him ground manners.  He is quiet and stands nicely. He knows commands on the ground and lounge line.  Now the problem is...he will not move with Glenn on him.  He will walk some but not to any faster.  He much prefers to just stand quietly.  When Glenn asks for a faster gait, the horse pins his ears, swishes his tail and sometimes tries to bite Glenns foot.  Glenn is an old cowboy and wants to beat the crap out of him.  I am afraid there will be a horrible fight.  What alternatives do we have?  Glenn is very much from the old school. He is no spring chicken (72) and his bones will scatter if he hits the gound.  We have put bags of rocks over the saddle, ponied him, and everything is OK....Just don't ask for anythin but a walk if you are on him.  HELP!!!!!

Answer
The horse is just being a horse. It sounds like more ground work is needed, if this horse pins his ears when asked to trot or canter, then he gets more pressure and has to move faster. This is all taught in the round pen or on line. If a horse moves consistently on the ground then that will transfer to when under saddle. Sounds like you are going too fast, the horse is telling you he does not respect you enough to listen so he needs more lesson on the ground to learn when you trot, he trots, when you say canter he canters, you can pony him more and the horse will want to keep up with another horse, but there are other problems with that.

YOU or someone has not done a good enough job on the ground so the horse does not know or does not think he has to listen, this is either a fear or lack of respect issue, NOT a horse issue.
