Question
A very dear friend of mine owns a Kentucky Mountain Horse.  The breed is known for its even temperment and versitility and my friends horse is a Stallion.  I have bred him to my Kentucky Mountain Mare so he has been activly breeding.
My Question is this:  My friend wants to be able to trail ride and he is very aware of the limitations of his Stallion in being able to do this with other riders unless he gelds him, and would rather not because he is well bred and does well in the show ring.  I had heard that there is now a shot available that trainers are using that "Calms them down" and will stay in the horses system for 30 days, however if there is such a shot is it only used on non-stallions that are maybe fractious or have issues from prior abuse?  If it can be used on Stallions does it affect them wanting to breed?  I know he's facing either Gelding him, which he does not want to do, or selling him intact so he can still breed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mary,
You may be thinking of Cetirizine hydrochloride which is an antihistamine . It will not affect his wanting to breed, but it is illeagal in some show rings. I would recommend that prior to your friend using a medication, that he trains the horse to act appropriately around all other horses. Using Vicks in the nose of a stallion can help, as can teaching the stallion that when he is wearing a certain halter or bridle he is allowed to breed and when he is wearing the other, he has to behave.
