Question
Ok my standardbred mare has been acting weird lately when I clean out her paddock. She's never done this before, up until a few months ago. When I'm cleaning out her paddock she'll come over and step between me and the wheelbarrow and point her bum at it. She doesn't put her ears back or anything, but just starts slowly backing up to it. I move her aside and move the wheelbarrow to where I need it, and she does it again! She keeps on doing it the whole time, and it gets a bit annoying but its not really causing any problems so I was just wondering if you have any idea why she does it? Lately I've just taken to cleaning the paddocks when she's in a different one so she can't disturb me, but its just weird. Any ideas why she does this? Thanks

Answer
There are many possibilities here and it depends entirely on her history.  I can't say for certain.  What you describe though sounds like she thinks she's backing up into a cart (the wheelbarrow looks like a small cart).  It's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head without seeing her.

You're doing the right thing.  It's not a dangerous habit, just annoying.  Best to move her out so she doesn't accidently hurt herself or you should anything go wrong.

Cheers
