Question
my last trainer broke myhorse to saddle w/no issues, she then started training him in reining by putting a wire bit  and tie down on him, he responed by putting his but into the barn wall, running thru bit & OTHER resistence attitudes. after three months i went to another trainer, he wanted to tie my horse to something solid and my horse started rearing, he put my horse in harness and he startred to rear and went over backward in the traces. i wanted him to use the blocker but he refused, saying that bvy putting a double halter on him and leaving him tied eventually he would learn solid tiejng, should i pick my horse up tomorrow and get him out of there also? I'VE READ BOOKS AND OFTEN SUGGEST THINGS TO MY TRAINERS AND SO FAR THE ONES I'VE HAD HAVE NOT BEEN VERY OPEN MINDED I.E. BLOCKER TIE RING AND, JOHN LYONS SNAFFLE BIT TRAINING, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Hi Mary!

PLEASE...Go get your horse NOW!!! OMG, where do these knot-heads come from.  Any ding-bat that throws a leg over a horse and doesn't fall off seems to think they are a horse trainer.  I am so angry right now I'm having a hard time typing!  UGH!  This is NO way to educate your horse.  Wire snaffles, tie-downs, and everything else you described is how you get a scared, braced horse that has no trust for the human.  I can't believe these types of people are still so common out there.  Run to your truck and go pick up your horse before they do more damage.

As it stands Mary, you now have some dues to pay to your horse.  It will take some time a patience to get even with him.  Don't expect a horse trainer to solve problems or to offer your horse a quality education.  Most "trainers" do more harm than good.  YOU need to learn about QUALITY horsemanship and take the responsibility to  educate your own horse.  Don't feel that you are alone.  I will help you find people that are world class horsemen and that really know horses and can help you.  I want you to attend a Buck Brannaman or Ray Hunt clinic now!  If you watch these men work, you will see a real difference in what quality horsemanship is.  Look at the DVD's by Buck and Ray.  THIS is what good horsemanship looks like.  They do not use tie-downs or gimmicks of any kind.  They start colts and horses in a simple D-ring snaffle and know how to use it in such a way that a horse understands and becomes softer and not hard as a rock.  These men are my teachers.  They understand horses and how a horse thinks and feels.  I advise people to watch Buck and Ray so they KNOW what quality is and so they will never be taken in by the cruel fakes that seem to lurk on every corner.

When your horse learns how to give to pressure in a fair way that the HORSE understands, you will be able to tie him with a thread and he will understand what to do with his FEET in order to do his job.  Putting a horse in a bigger bind in never the way to teach them to tie.  They are scared and feel trapped and will continue to pull back because they do not know what to do with their feet and they do not trust the human to offer the right solution.  Get the ground work DVD by Buck Brannaman and memorize it!  Go to a clinic with Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, or Ricky Quinn.  It will really help you to attend a foundation horsemanship or better yet a colt starting.

Go to my website and start working your way through the resource list I have posted there.  We can then start working through specific issues that you are having.  The only way to save your horse Mary, is to educate yourself.  Yes, I know there is so much to learn, but the journey is a wonderful one.  You have taken the first step by recognizing what you DON'T want that that is huge.  I can't spoon feed you all of the information you need and must have, there is just too much and it can never be done in just one e-mail!  It is like building a car from the asphalt up!  You will really have to start working at this.  I will be here to give guidance, direction and support and keep you on the right path.  If you were in Oregon, this process would be much easier, but we will just have to deal with what we have.

Pick up your horse.  Watch Buck's ground work DVD.  Find a clinic to attend.  Clinics with Buck, Ricky and Ray are small, personal, and focus on you and your horse.  They are not big showy events with a huge crowd, they are very simple.  Just people with their own horses trying to find a better way.  You will do more in 4 short days with MY teachers than any of the "trainers" have EVER been able to do, AND your horse will be better not worse.  The difference is good horsemanship with good horsemen.  This is why I HATE the term "trainer" and why I really don't like the folks that call themselves "trainers".  If they say they are a "trainer", run the other way!

Okay Mary, time for you to get busy.  You CAN educate your own horse with the right direction and support.  I have given you some of the tools to help you start!  Now, get after it and keep me posted on your progress.  If I need to refine or define more, let me know.

Smiles, Denise!
