Question
Hello,

I have a 5 year old reining horse that has always had on sliders, but we are starting him on barrels. Should we leave the sliders on him or change to a different style shoe?

Answer
HELLO ANGIE...THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION...

Definitely change his shoes. You are naturally dealing with two
different events. Sliding plates do not offer any traction that is needed for barrel racing.

For over 30 years, I have used a "rim shoe" on 97% of the barrel
horses I shoe. It is NOT overly "aggressive" and will not put
too much strain on the hind limbs...hocks and fetlocks.

Some riders choose to use caulks( also called corks)on their shoes. The main problem with that much grab is that it DOESN'T allow the hind limbs to release properly. Getting good traction is one thing,
but any hesitation will cause stress and possible injury/tendons,
ligaments and at least swelling. You will later notice in time, over-sized fetlocks/ankles and even constant puffiness of the lower limbs. NOT worth the risk.

Thanks again...Best to you!
