Cracking/ Shoe size

Question
When I picked up my Qurab/Appy's foot the other day I noticed cracking and ridging underneath near his frog. I've heard there are conditioners to correct this problem but I don't what to get. Any suggestions?
If this problem is not sloved and he still has cracking, how do I know what size shoe to get, or does the farrier take of the sizing? Thanks for your time!

Answer
HELLO JESSICA...THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION...

I don't understand what you call "ridging" ?? You can get back to me
if I'm wrong with this; I don't know what part of the U.S.A.
you're from, but most ALL the U.S. has been very wet this Spring.
He maybe "shedding" his frog. They will grow a new frog, give or
take once a year. In extreme wet weather, many times they will lose the frog all at once...sometimes making them tender. Most of the time it is very gradual and you wouldn't notice it.

Unless it's 90/100 degrees, I wouldn't condition it. If it's too wet all of the time, you can use Kopertox or iodine to dry and keep it in good shape. It maybe needs trimming by an experienced farrier.
A competent farrier has all the shoes you would need and the right size. As I've said numerous times..."the best shod horse is a barefoot one". We shoe for "protection or correction". Unless you are using your horse in rough, rocky, or abusive conditions or your horse is getting tender, then a good trim every 6 weeks would benefit your horse.

Hollar back at me if I can be of more help...
Best to You !
