Horse keeps throwing shoes

Question
Hi Mr. Meyers:

I have a new gelding that was shod in front and barefoot in back when I got him. I used the farrier my boss uses and had him shod all around.

I was appalled when I spent time the next day looking at his feet. That's a long story.

Here's the problem: he threw a back shoe in the pasture and the farrier reset it (but it still hangs to the inside by more than 1/8" and the hoof overhangs the outside by 1/4").

Today, I saw the clinches standing out on the other back foot, and one nail missing. I tried to flatten the clinches, but didn't have the hand strength to do it. On a short trail ride, I looked back and under, and the shoe looked as if it had been nailed on sideways!
I walked my horse home and pulled the shoe.

Should I just use the round pen until he is ready for his next shoeing (New farrier lined up!)or, have the old farrier come and pull the other back shoe?

I'd just as soon not deal with him - he does not call back, but just shows up and does my horse - errrrgggggg!

Thanks for your help again.
Steph

Answer
HELLO STEPH...THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION...

BOY HAVE I SEEN THIS BEFORE....  :)  :)

FIRST...if he's not professional enough to call you back...forget it!
You are RIGHT. Without being cruel...I think he's missing the boat on the hind hooves.
An 1/8 of an inch is about right on MOST shoes...BUT... if the clinches are coming loose and twisting, then draw side or quarter clips to keep the shoes where THEY BELONG and it also keeps stress off the walls. Even when hooves get long, they SHOULD NOT over grow the shoes or hang over the shoes.

If you can pull the shoe correctly without damaging the walls, then pull it and your next farrier will know what to do.

If you have a problem finding a qualified farrier, you might try
the American Farriers Assoc. or the Guild of Professional Farriers.
On their web-sites you can find many farriers with different qualifications, state by state.

Things will be easier for you when you have a good farrier.
As I always say... "HORSES NEVER LIE"    :)  :)

Best to You !!
