Question
I getting real tired of trying to find a decent farrier.  I've tried a number of
them and found one I liked.  He's so "busy", he never returns my calls and
therefore my horses go way past their trim time and I end up calling someone
else.  I am considering going to a farrier school just to be able to do my own
horses.  On the internet, I found a relatively close school which has 2, 4, 6
and 12 week sessions.  It is in Macomb, IL.  Have you heard of it, is it
reputable and do you think a 2 week session would be long enough for me to
get what I need (I can't take any more vacation from my real job to go any
longer)?

Answer
Dear Leisa...
Thank U for your inquiry. I realize your dilemma and understand. I'd have to ask you as I once did with my prospective students. Age is important. Have you stayed in good physical shape for a long time. Is your memory and retention real good.To be a competent farrier of any degree,
you must have these traits...including a love for the horses
and patience above all!!
I have heard of the school in Macomb, IL. There are other with bigger reputations...but if it's close to home...so be it. Because of my teaching experience and 35 yrs. now in the profession...6 weeks is the LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME to be proficient. I'm sorry but you should re-arrange your schedule if you are sincere.

You will be very sorry about what "YOU DON'T KNOW", instead of what you've learned. In 2 weeks, no matter how sharp you are; you will be confused most of the time and don't want all your education coming from mistakes!! It's a terrible way to learn.
I'd hate to see your time wasted, because you were "mis-informed" I do care about anyone sincere about this profession. WE don't want alot of "regrets" later in life.

If I can be of more help, let me know...
Thanks again and Best of Luck to you !!
