Question
I live in so. Fl. we just had tropical storm fay. my 7 year old quarter horse has 2 of her 3 acre paster under a foot of rain water. how long am I safe to leave her out there? It has been almost a week.

Answer
Oh my .. having lived in SW FLA for a couple of years I KNOW how dreadful even just the summer rains can be!

Is there a place your horse can go to dry off?  The remaining 1 acre of her pasture you said is not under water?  Is there any way you can cordone off that 1 acre with some temporary fencing until the remaining 2 dry out?  That would be your best bet.

Think of hooves like your finger nails or toe nails. They get soft when wet for long periods of time. The more you can offer her dry ground, the better.

I know its a tough situation. Even stalling her and then walking her daily for exercise might be better for her than standing in water.
