NO...it's not a must. BUT...it IS great protection!!
It keeps your clothes from wear and being torn and when shoeing, it repels nails that might
cut you and your clothes and cause you injury.
A sharp edge of a trimmed hoof before rasping can cut like a knife. A nail punctured into your
lower body or leg is painfull !! I've had it happen even with an apron that is old or has
slid to one side when a horse is pulling me around or trying to pull their leg loose !!
Just extra insurance from harm...
