Red Eared Slider...

Question
I recently asked you a question about my red-eared slider and your information was very helpful in fixing the problems at hand.  However, I just noticed today that my red eared slider has some sort of fungal (?) infection on his legs...it looks like white fuzzy bubbles all over his legs (front and back).  Any idea as to what this might be, what caused it, and how to fix it?  I attempted looking it up, but couldn't find anything that was close to what I'm seeing.  Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Answer
It probably is a fungus.

The simple treatment would be to use a 'turtle sulfa dip' and/or 'stress coat' from the pet store (Stress-coat is a fish product). Follow diretions and see if it helps.

If this does not help noticably within a few days or a week, try something more aggressive.

1. Rinse the turtle's legs off

2. Swab them with Betadine Solution (generic is 'povodine iodine'), let dry for an hour.

3. If the skin is damaged, apply a couple dabs of antibiotic ointment. Let that sit for a while if used.

4. Return to the tank and repeat daily.

Good filtration and good UVB lighting will help minimize fungi. http://www.austinsturtlepage.com has some good articles on this.

Good luck!
