Softshell or Painted

Question
I am making a small pond in my yard. Should I get a softshell or painted? What are their lifespans? Are they a good choice for beginners? I was trying not to get one that lived longer than 25 years.

Softshells are finicky turtles with specialized cares, get huge, and are pretty destructive to ponds, etc. Go with the Painted.

Most Painted Turtles live about 5-10 years in captivity, with some people getting them to live over 20 years.
