Question
I have a large female RES turtle who has for the past year or so had a great appetite.Lately it is not as good and she is less active in the tank.A smaller male who is her tank mate keeps clawing after her back end. I am concerned that she may be egg bound. How can I tell? Do I have to provide her a nesting area every year? She has always been in her aquarium home with a basking area to dry off when she wants. I have never seen any eggs.
If I need a nesting area ......how should it be?   Thank you for any help you can provide.    Dan

Answer
Hello Im sorry it took me so long to get back to you the question was not sent to me,.
The question re gravid- Is her back end swollen? If you can send me a picture Id be able to advise better.
If she is in fact gravid, all you need to do is take her to a vet to see how far she is, have x rays done. If she is egg bound they will have to remove the eggs. Or they can give an injection of a hormone that will make her lay them. She can and will lay yearly.
Best of luck to you
