Question
I have a 9 year old Russian Tortoise.  I just watched by her and noticed that she is throwing up her food.  Please advise.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Beth,

Are you seeing other symptoms, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, runny nose, wheezing, gaping (stretching the neck out to breathe with an open mouth), etc.?  These are an indication that something is seriously wrong and your tortoise needs to see a vet.  Sometimes they can gag on their food a little, so if this is a one-time occurrence I wouldn't be too concerned.  I would also check over your tortoise's enclosure to make sure it's set up correctly, as husbandry can have an affect on health.

The enclosure should be roomy enough for the tortoise to get exercise (bare minimum 4 x 2) and allow for good air circulation (no tanks).  A good substrate is a mix of coir (bed-a-beast) and playsand, kept slightly damp.  The basking temperature should be 90-95 degrees (measured at the substrate level under the lamp) and the cool side 70-75 degrees.  A good UVB bulb is also needed, or a combination heat/UVB bulb (such as the ZooMed Powersun).  Diet should be leafy greens and weeds; no veggies, fruit, or pellets.

Go over your care routine to see if you need to make any changes, and keep an eye on him for further symptoms.  If he continues to have problems, take him to a good herp vet for diagnosis and treatment.  Good luck!
