Question
i have just noticed that my 4 yr old female Hermann tortoise is trying to bite the legs of my 1 yr old female Hermann tortoise. i bought the eldest in November and the younger one two weeks later and this is the first time they have shown to have any problems of this kind. i would like to know if there are any reasons as to why she has stared doing this and what can be done about it. thanks

Answer
Common issues would be territoriality or mock mating. My first thought is that the enclosure is possibly too small. The rule of thumb is at least 100 square inches per inch of turtle. So, a couple of 4" turtles would need about 800" of space- say about 20"x40".
