Baby turtle still wont eat

Question
My baby box turtle is almost 5 weeks old and still hasn't eaten a thing. I'm starting to get worried. I've left out a little dish of special baby box turtle pellets and wardley's pellets and hasn't touch either of them. I've also tried to feed him red worms and he wants nothing to do with them. What should I do!?!?!

Answer
Hi Billy,

Hatchlings can live off the yolk sac for some time after hatching, so don't worry too much yet.  If you're seeing some activity, that's a good sign.  Bloodworms are a great first food, but you can also try tiny mealworms or pinhead crickets if you can get them.  Don't bother with the pellets as they're not really very good for them anyway.

Make sure there is plenty of moisture in the enclosure to prevent dehydration.  Using sphagnum moss as a substrate will help--pour some warm water in daily to keep the moisture up.  Hatchlings will dehydrate quickly if there isn't enough moisture in their enclosure.
