Biting Ball Python

Question
I have a female ball python, about 3ft long.  The snake seems healthy enough, but recently bit me.  Now, this is not the first bite, or even the first time the snake has bitten and locked on.  But usually I can account for the reason (my hand smelled like a mouse, the snake had escaped, was cold, and I reached for it too quickly, etc.).  However, I had her out the other night.  She had been out for about 5-10 minutes, was perfectly behaved.  She was active, moving around, but not aggressive at all.  Then, as I was about to put her in her tank, she saw my arm, smelled it, and then bit it.  She didn't strike, just bit and latched on.  It was clear, however, that she thought she had found dinner.

I guess I have three questions.  First, why did she bite?  Did she smell something on me?  Or was it something I did?  I've always heard that ball pythons are rather docile.  At the same time, she is a wild (and semi-untrainable) animal, unlike dogs/cats.  Is a bite now and then unavoidable?

Second, I am considering gloves and long-sleeve shirts to prevent a similar situation.  In addition, I was tempted to spray the gloves with a cologne lightly to block any additional prey-smells from her... Is this a bad idea?  I don't want to make her feel defensive/agressive and bite.  But I don't want her to suddenly catch a scent and chomp down on the nearest warm flesh.

At this point, I'm not concerned for me - at 3ft long, her bites don't hurt too badly.  More, I'm concerned that she will break a jaw/tooth when I detach her from me.

That brings up my last question.  If they do lose a tooth, do their teeth grow back?  Not that she has to-date, I am just curious of whether they grow new teeth like a shark or if they have a single set like other animals.

Thanks in advance for your patience with this (long) question!

Answer
I can't say why she bit, but you described a feeding bite not a defensive one.  I'd say she's probably hungry, but that is just a guess.  Losing a tooth will not hurt her one bit.  They have 6 rows of teeth.  I believe the teeth do grow back but I am not 100% positive on that.  I wouldn't bother w/ perfume but maybe the glove is good idea for a while until you're sure the behavior is fixed.  Good Luck!
