Corn Snake Question

Question
I bought a baby snow corn snake about five years ago.  He has always been very passive, and great with children.  I found out about two years ago, the store I purchased him from gave me completely wrong care information for care for him.  (They told me not to give him any heat source except natural heat because he was albino, and also told he to feed him in his tank, rather than taking him out and putting him a special feeding tank/box.  I was told by someone who raises corn snakes not to change anything because he was already used to this lifestyle and was content.  He bit me two days ago for the first time as if I startled him, but tried to bite again about an hour later.  I called a pet store and they told me that he thought I was food, and told me to change the way I feed him (by taking him out of his tank) and also put heat in his tank.  I love my snake and need help.  Please let me know what I should do and also tell me why you think he bit me.  I really don't think he bit me because he thought I was food.  I pick him up all the time.  I am very concerned.

Answer
Hi Nicole
I do admit that it is strange that he bit you after having him for five years.  BUT I will tell you as they get older they become settled in their ways which in turn can cause a problem during feeding time.  YOu didn't mention if he was close to feeding time/day when he bit you.  I have a 7 year old kingsnake has always eaten in her cage for the most part and will go into what I call a "Frenzy" when feeding time draws near.  If she thinks it is that time to eat she would try to bite because I have fed her so many years in her cage.  This being the drawback to inside cage feeding.
So you do have a choice.  Either continue feeding him in his cage or start a new routine of taking him out and feeding him in a shoebox.  Of course be sure to handle him from behind during this time.
Also....I highly recommend you get an under-the-tank heater for his cage.  It doesn't matter that he is albino.  All snakes need a heat source to help them with digestion and body temperature regulation.  Keep it on one far-end of your cage.  Good luck and thanks for writing :-)
