objects in tank

I just recieved a piece of deadwood from my roommate to put in my snakes tank.  how do i clean it or make sure that it is clean enough so that my snake doesn't get sick from it?  Is that even a danger?

Not really a big danger.  But there could be things living on/in the stick that you'd want to deal w/.  Soak the stick in a 10% bleach solution for an hour or so then resoak in clean water and finally give it a good rinse.  It should be all set at that point.
