Question
I got two Boas for my birthday, this is all new to me. they are 4 ft long and seem to be well manered. But I am still leary of holding them. What is the likleyness of getting bit, I would hate that. I have been doing a lot of reading and surfing the web to educate myself. Work in progress!
any other tips for me.

Answer
Brandon,
The likelihood is very high that you will be bitten. That's the bad news, the good news is that I have been bitten over 1K times and I am still walking around today. Snakes are unpredictable creatures, just like dogs. If you have ever been bitten by a chihuahua or smaller dog, you have already suffered much worse pain than a snake bite. Snakes teeth are designed to puncture and hold. They are needle sharp, so they do not hurt that bad, really. Above and beyond that, it leaves some really cool marks that you can share with your friends!

Here are some tips: Never handle your snakes with the smell of food (especially rats) on your hands. Learn to read your snakes, see when they are in a defensive posture. You can always tell if they are in "S" shape. Handle them with cloth garden gloves to start. If you do get bitten, they will take the brunt of the hit. Never handle them until 48 hours after they have eaten. Be fearless. Snakes can sense fear and a bold hand get bitten less.
