Question

Snake
You can please tell me what kind of snake this is?  I found it in the Gainesville, FL area.  It is very tame and about 2 ft long. If you wish to share anything else about this snake, that would be good.

Answer
Hey Craig,

That's a great find. You have yourself a beautiful ball python. They reach lengths of up to six feet, eat mice or medium sized rats.

A few thing you should know:
Temp - 85-92 degree ambient air temp
Hot spot - 95-100 degrees
Humidity level - 65%
Feeding - once a week, a prey item equal to the mid body girth
Housing - a 20 gallon tank is plenty of room, hide boxes are needed one for both sides. This allows the snake to decided whether it wants heat or to cool down.

When purchasing heat make sure you by a couple thermostats this will ensure temps are held. Do not buy a heat rock there is a great chance of the snake getting burned. An under the tank heat pad is great. You should then have a secondary heat source that with control the air temps. The heat pad is for the hot spot. The other can be a heat light placed five inches above the screen top to prevent a burned snake. This one will control the air temp. Ball pythons are nocturnal animals meaning they are more active at night. They will tens to sleep most the day, but will seek out heat or coolness.
