King Snake Rectal Bleeding

Question
I have a king snake that has been in habitat for a while now, nothing new in his environment, eating fine, has shed without issues and generally seeming to be in good health, but when I picked up for handling today noticed there was bleeding coming from the rectal area. Haven't held him for about 5 days at which time I cleaned his habitat, and there was no bleeding then. It almost appears that his rectum is split, or larger than it should be, but when I have searched for reasons on this, it does not fit the description for a prolapsed rectum. He stays curled on his heating source now and not moving much. We use terrarium matting (the fake grass, green felt sold in stores for snakes) so no wood chips in his home. Do you have any idea what could cause him to bleed this way?

Answer
Hi James,
My best guess is that he had an impaction and managed to pass it. Keep an eye on him. If he keeps eating and the bleeding stops after another feeding or two, pay it no mind. These things happen. If he stops eating or the bleeding continues, see an exotic vet.
