Question
Hi we just recently bought a 2 year old red-tail boa-constrictor and he has not eaten for us yet. We have had him for a just about a month. When we got him the lady said that he should have no problem eating and that he was most likely very hungry. So we have been trying to get him to eat and we gotten nothing. The lady we bought him from says that he is shedding, but he doesn't look like it. So my question is more of a concern in how do we know if he is sick or he actually is just shedding and will later eat?

Answer
The shedding process takes 3 to 5 days, so he could not have been shedding all this time. You will know when he is about to shed as a film will kind of gray out his eyes. This is what is known as going into "blue". If you are feeding frozen / thawed, try live, but be sure to watch the entire process; rats can bite snakes and even kill them. If he still will not eat within another 5 days, take him to an exotic animal vet or back to the lady who you bought him from. It is bad etiquette and unprofessional to sell you a snake that will not eat. Most shops will feed them in front of you before you leave the business.
