Question
Hello Pam how are you?

Heres the story... I work doing lawn matinace(weekly cuts/trimming ect) today at one of our regualr houses I found a cold bearded dragon full grown about 15 inches in lenth in a flower/plant alongside the persons house! where he was found he could have came from any of the house surrounding the area beaucse in that area the backyards are not fenced in... he was very poilte in letting mepick him up and we brought him home in a cardboard box that was in the truck he poked air holes in it. he is currently in a ten gallon tank with a wire lid...a heat lamp over heat its not hot enough right yet becasue the heat lamp being used can't hold a higher wattage bulb....its around 80 farenhite now, since I placed him in the cage he has not moved... he looks at you and slightly tilts his head when you talk around the tank but is sitting in one spot kkind of porped up in the ront, He did scratch around in the cardboard box in the truck and tryed to get out of my hands when I tryed to put him in the box when we found him, He is in very good shape.. well rounded tummy and the only thing I see wrong with him is he has some dry left over shed skin on his feet and toes that is slightly lifted but not off.
theselizards are very popular pets around the city but to live in this city would be outrages to expect them to live outdoors... since its getting coolerhere I expect he would have only lived a few more weeks if left unfound. Maybe he was kicked out of his home by his owners or lost by someone. I have made him a finly minced salad of assorted greens and he has been given a tiny water bowl and I just sprinlkled some water on his... shjould I soke him to rehidrate him?

I am headingout to buy somecrickets and worms right now but want to wait a day or two to see if he will be ok and live before buying 100 dollar uv lights.. will he be ok without those lights for two or three days?

When is he expected to eat? is he just rally scared could that be why he hasnt moved?

Please let me know what you think and I will look forward to hearing from you soon, thanks for any info in advance.

Answer
 You didn't mention your city/town/state so I don't know if there is a reptile rescue in your area.  If you want to keep him, a 10 gallon won't do for a 15" dragon.  On the cheap, to see if he adapts, get the largest Sterlite storage bin and buy/make a wire mesh lid.  Get a 24 or 36" flourescent light fixture, and a dome light fixture from Lowes or Home Depot.  The dome light should have a ceramic socket and should take up to 250watts at least.  You can use 4/$1 household bulbs in the dome.  Walmart...go to the patio section and get a digital thermometer with a probe. The only big expense but what he has to have is a proper UVB fluorescent tube.  The only recommended brands are ZooMed's Reptisun, 10.0 or 5.0, or Hagen's Exoterra Repti-glo 8.0. Cheapest price found is online, at Reptiledirect.com, or Reptilesupply.com.
Line the bottom of the bin with newspaper or papertowel, clean pavers or bricks or branches with 10% bleach water and allow to sun dry, you want these to allow him to climb near his lights to bask.  Put the probe of the digital thermometer on the basking place which should be raised to ithin 6-8" of the UVB. Set the thermometer for "outside"  The temp should be 100-105F, otherwise he won't digest his food.  The thermometer itself can rest on the cool end of the bin, that should be 70-75F.
 As for food, for an adult, at least three good greens...dandelion, collards, turnip greens, mustard greens;
and two veggies, grated butternut squash is a favorite, along with other winter squashes, fresh green beans, snap beans, wax beans. They are omnivores, so an adult needs insects a couple of times a week, like crickets, zophoba worms (AKA superworms), silkworms, butterworms, Phoenix worms...crix are cheapest and all farm raised insects are cheapest online.  This time of year an adult beardie may slow down and get ready to brumate which is a semi-hibernation for part of the winter, so I usually stop insects in September, to help clean their gut of animal protein in case they decide to completely sleep winter away.
  He also needs a calcium supplement and a vitamin...Repcal calcium and Herptivite is best and also cheaper online.
  In two weeks, if you have decided he's your new baby, he should be checked by a good herp vet.  There are two sites to find you one:

For reptile vet recommended by herpers:

If there's none in your area, a general list of all reptile vets:

 By that time, you'll want a proper home for him, minimum tank size would be a 30gal breeder tank, but many handy people have built their scaly kids palaces from old TV consoles, dressers, etc.

 Good luck with him, beardies are surprisingly loving pets with lots of attention and care.  They bond to their humans and do not need company of their own kind.
