Question
QUESTION: Our crested gecko is shedding for the second time within about a month (he is maybe about 1-1 1/2 years old at most). He is lethargic and doesn't seem to be eating much.  He is eating dirt(which I understand is common when shedding as he is rubbing his chin) but his lower jaw bends backward almost appearing broken. He seems to be trying to clear the "Eco Earth" fiber from his mouth... He also tried to jump, but actually fell and landed on his back and just layed there--didn't seem to be able to roll over to right himself. All just very strange! He's been basically on the ground for a few weeks--not really climbing on plants or vines...
He gets fed a combination of baby food fruits and small crickets. There is good humidity in the aquarium.

ANSWER: Jim and Amy,          Do you have the correct lighting on them. These guys are nocturnal and need just heat during the day and not that much. No higher than 85 degrees. Since they are nocturnal mostly the problem is they are not in natural sunlight and does not get the UVA light to create the calcium they need to keep their bones strong and not let them get porous as they grow. This condition is called MBD (metabolic bone disease). No heat is usually necessary at night. They need to cool off at 60 to 70 degrees at night. Supplement his diet with calcium in his food and on his crickets. Do this now!!! He can live up to 10 yrs. You can also put a milk lid in his enclosure with calcium in it(repti cal)... he will eat it. Good Luck, Tina

QUESTION: So he may get better with calcium supplements every day--even though we are starting after he's gotten so bad?? He looks terrible and won't eat. Can't even close his lower jaw. He's not trying to eat the fiber--it's getting in his mouth because as he moves, his jaw drags and he can't lift his head. Also, he struggles with his shed--can you safely help peel the shed off?? He could not get it off his eyes last time and struggled for days... Thanks for the info!! Hopefully "Spikey" will make it!!

Answer
Jim and Amy,          Try to give Spikey a mineral oil treatment. Maybe he has eaten too much substrate. Give it to him in an eye dropper. It will help him pass all the bad stuff he ate. Fortunately if his jaw is broken they adapt to disabilities better than we do. Do not take his shed off. It is like when we sunburn you can go into his good skin. It will hurt and leave scars. Soak him well and give him lots of stuff to rub against..... Tina
