Gecko with swollen eye

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tracie,  Our Gecko did seem to like his new environment with the slate and felt.  He was out doing some exploring after we put him in there.

Normally he alway ate all the crickets, but this time two of them had gotten away. We took them out as soon as we noticed they were in there.  I do know that we will never leave any in there for more then 30 min after he finishes eating.  I feel so bad, I just didn't know that they would bite.

Any kind of warm tea bags?  You mean moist bags or just heated up tea bags?  How long should we hold them there?

Yes, the antibiotic ointment is kind of like neusporin.  It was a triple antibiotic ointment.  It contains: Polymyxin B Sulfate, Bacitracin Zinc, Neomycin Sulfate & Pramoxine HCI.  We used that once and he didn't like it, so we used a warm washcloth to kind of wipe it off.  We put it under his eye and NOT in his eye.  We have not used it since.

He doesn't seem to mind the saline solution though and he kind of likes the warm wathcloths.

I ordered the Baytril from the site you had listed for that other lady.  Its called All Bird Products and I ordered it on 4/15/12.  Do you know if they usually ship out quickly?  I will try to get ahold of them today and see if it has been shipped out yet.  Then I ordered the rest of the stuff from your website. It shows that it has been shipped, but the tracking number didn't show me anything.

I will continue trying to give him the chicken baby food.  I will be happy even if he just eats a little bit.

I want you to know that we are so happy that we found you and that you are helping me.  This is my sons pet, the Geckos name is Enzo.  My son it gone to tech school so. we are taking care of him for now.  I sure hope that he gets better pretty soon.  I am the type of person that worries all the time, so I am getting stressed about Enzo.

Thank you very much, I look forward to hearing back from you.  Connie

ANSWER: Hello Connie,

I would use an herbal bag like chamomile since it has healing properties, along with the saline solution too.  Hopefully, it will take the swelling down.
I am sorry, crickets can be so mean.  I had a large one out today, feeding one of my dragons & he tried to bite me!  Well, of course I was trying to feed him but they really can bite.
Great, the all birds should ship fast & you should have the Baytril really quickly.  She is very nice too.
Oh ok, under his eye for the neosporin is fine.
Yeah, the tracking number takes a bit to get in the system, it should be showing today.  I hope you get it fast!
Definitely keep giving the baby food daily, it is better than no food.  Even if he eats a cricket or two a little extra wont hurt him right now.  It will boost his immune system.
I can understand, Enzo sounds like a special little boy.  I know how worrisome things can get, it is hard not to worry about them they are so small.
I am happy to hear he was exploring his tank after the felt & slate were put in.  I hope he likes it!

I am glad to help!  I hope he is doing better.
Talk to you soon.

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,

Enzo has been eating the chicken w/ chicken gravy baby food.  He eats between .5ml and 1ml daily.  He has went to the bathroom.  The first time it was just a little bit and then last night there was quite a bit.

Last night he shed.  It took him a long time and he had a hard time doing so.  He had trouble getting it off of 2 of his feet and legs (one front and one back), tail and half of his head (the side that is swollen).  He kept working at it and finally he got it.  He did eat some of the shed, but then I had read somewhere not to leave that in the terrarium if he doesn't eat it right away, so I took the extra out.

We continue to put saline solution on his eye 3 to 4 times a day and putting the antibiotic ointment under and behind his eye, making sure none gets in his eye.

The Baytril 10% came today.  It says on the bottle Baytril 10% has a concentration of 100mg per 1ml.  I weighed him again today so I would have an accurate weight, he weighs 54 grams or 1.9 oz.  How much of the Baytril should we give him?  How many times a day should it be given to him?

I have not received the probiotics yet, I looked at the tracking info and it looks like that should be here tomorrow.  Can we start the Baytril before we get the probiotics or should we wait?

Thank you again for all your help.  I look forward to hearing back from you as soon as possible.

Connie

ANSWER: Hello Connie,

Great the Baytril got there.  Yes, it looks like your probiotics should make it tomorrow.
You can go ahead & give the first dose of Baytril, that is fine.  His dose will be .003ml
Do you have a syringe that small?  If not, let me know. I will verify how many drops that would be.  The dose on average is 5mg/kg & 10mg/kg for stubborn infections.
That is great he is eating the baby food now & he has shed, too.  I hope his eye swelling goes down too, poor guy.

Keep me posted on him!

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,

He stopped liking the chicken baby food, so we mixed up a bacth of the gecko slurry.  We used it for him before when he just wouldn't eat, which was years ago.  He seems to be liking that better.

After he shed, I told my husband that it looked like there was still some skin by his eye and then by his toes.  We took a wet qtip and got the one by his eye to loosed up.  It was sticking a little bit away from his eye, so my husband was able to grab it will his fingers.  He kelp fully on it slowly, he was afraid he was going to hurt him, but he never moved throug the whold them.  He finany got it out, it was about 1/4" in length.  It went inside under his eye.  After that was out we could see that he was as lease moving his eye around inside all of the swellen.

Yes, the Baytril did arrive.  We have a dropper but it doesn't go for that small of a dosage, so if you could verify how many drops that would be, it would make it much easier.  I don't want to give him to much.

Thank you again for all your help.  I will continue to stay in touch letting you know how he is doing.  Your help means a lot to me and my husband, but expecially my son.

I look forward to hearing back from you again.

Thank You!  Connie

Answer
Hello Connie,
That is good he shed & you got the little pieces off too.
So he can at least move his eye even if it is swollen?   I am sure he feels better with the shed off of his eye area.
The amount of Baytril is tiny!  Give one small drop which is equivalent to .003ml-.005ml & that will be fine!
I see you received your probiotics also today.  I hope he likes them.
That is fine, the gecko slurry will be fine for him.  Let me know how he is doing!
